ORC: Week 2

It's week two already and we are making some slow and steady progress!
(click on image to head over to Calling it Home)

Okay... so have had a few days to plan our next move from here.

The first and most important thing was accomplished a few weeks ago when we moved in.
This nasty room was Scrubbed clean!

Next up was removing this light.

And installing this light from Pottery Barn

We chose a slightly different globe for the light for this space.

Next we updated the electrical outlet and the light switch.

Now that the room was clean I started to brain storm ideas.
Are you all aware of the amazing new fabric collection Sara Richardson is doing for Kravet?
It's pure genius!!!!

Here is my inspiration photo for the cabinets.

Our paint color is Sockeye by Sherwin Williams

The home made chalk paint had great coverage over the graining in the oak cabinets.

super digging this floral fabric.
The aforementioned fabric (panel in the background)

The diamond fabric I went ahead and purchased and reupholstered a cornice I had used in our last home.
I love how it turned out.
Now I just need to purchase the panel fabric.

Completed so far:
*replaced electrical outlet
*replaced light switch
*installed new pottery barn light
*upholstered and hung cornice
*primed and painted cabinets

What we have left to do:
*countertops
*cabinet hardware
*paneling treatment for the walls
*artwork
*accessories
*runner

Stay tuned for next week.
And come see what all the other projects progress looks like.

One Room Challenge: Downstairs bathroom.

Click on the image to go head over to Calling it Home and see all the other fabulous rooms people are tackling!

I am so excited to be jumping feet first in on the downstairs half bath.

The one room challenge is a Great way to hold me accountable to finish this space quickly!

Its obviously a space used by the guests that pass through our home pretty often and I want it to be an inviting and fun space.

Our last house was a place for me to really experiment with my own style and see what we did and didn't like as a couple.

This house will be one for me to push the envelope a little.

 Here are the before photos.
Although I am sooo thankful the tiling throughout the home was updated to a neutral tile it amazes me they painted over wallpaper and did not touch anything else throughout the house.
Exhibit A: the lighting, cabinet, countertop....

So.... stay tuned as we begin this transformation!

We have begun on the cabinetry and here is our inspiration for the walls.
The painted over wallpaper is buckling and in pretty bad shape so we plan to do a farmhouse paneling effect in here.

As of right now we do not plan on hanging sconces but would love to eventually.

And not quite this color but along these lines of painting the cabinetry.

Check back next week to see the progress on the cabinets!
Feel free to link up your project!! (click on the image)

Bathroom Lighting

As I mentioned in a previous post one of our first goals for the house is lighting.

For the downstairs bathroom and the master bath we decided to go with this light from pottery barn.

Once I get fully unpacked from our trip I will take a before and after for yall so you can see!!

Hopefully tomorrow!

I swear.. with as much as I am into at pottery barn right now they should be paying me for these wonderful shameless plugs!!! haha

Previous Owner Follow Up

Really not a whole lot changed in this bathroom.

I love the taupe color, its a good warm tone that doesn't have really yellow undertones.

Wonder if this is the same color in the hallway leading upstairs?

The cabinets were painted black.

The lights they show were not in the home when we purchased and what was there was not very functional.

Other than some paint and new light fixtures this room has virtually stayed the same.

Found the sconces on super clearance at the West Elm outlet for about $20.00 a piece

And yes the cabinets were my first project in this home and these were pre pinterest days people... no on warned me to not put poly on top of the flat black paint.

Someday I will redo this....

The guesthouse: office drama

This is the look I was going for in my "office" after a friend asked why I had never used this space as my office I felt it was something I needed to do.
My fear to never start this project was ALL the work involved in this renovation.
1. remove wallpaper
2.install carpet
3. paint everything! walls, trim, cabinetry... EVERYTHING
4. completely overhaul the bathroom
5. install proper shelving in the closet.

And not to mention I don't really want to spend a bunch on this project.

Sooo I needed inspiration and BAD!

So I started painting... Antiqua Aqua by Ben Moore

Then I got crazy and thought it would look good to paint the trim high gloss grey.
NO... it umm looks bad... see... DIY fails happen.... you just never know when that Idea will be good or bad.

So then... I sat down to work on an applique in my new office and.... my children played in their "mini-playroom."
AC found some chapstick and I told her she could use it. She proceeded to go to the bathroom to see her pretty lips... She pulled on the sink... and it happened.

It a miracle she was not harmed. Only severely sprayed with water.
The sink fell off the wall and the pipe bringing water from the main house proceeded to severely pour into the space.

Here is the aftermath after the overly dramatic shutoff attempt.

yes... my nasty not unpacked yet garage flooded as well. and everything everything out here is ALL garage sale stuff!!! I am just thankful for boxes that were raised and unharmed.

The newly installed carpet has already endured a good soaking. Now just praying we dont have mildew issues.

Now for the great story:
I grab the baby and run to the bathroom. Shreels people shreels as my 3 yr. old is being pelted with a forceful stream of water to the face straight from the wall!

I yell run, grab the embroidery machine in one hand and baby on the hip and we drop the machine in the kitchen and proceed to run across the street to see if the neighborhood handy man can help.
The man who is always home isnt... Awesome!

Call my friend Ruth. "Is your husband home?"
Ruth says "NO! Whats wrong Jenny Beth are you okay?"
"NO!!! I SHOUT FLOOD IN THE GUESTHOUSE!!! HELP!!!"

she heads over.
In the meantime I call casey and he hangs up on me... I run to the curb, baby on hip and 3 yr old screaming from trauma of the event. I open the plate cover to our water main and for the life of me cannot process how to turn the water main off.

Ruth pulls up...behind the crazy woman getting a flyer from my for sale sign.

And yes I did think this lady was a good samaratain doing a u turn to help me. No! She smiled at me calmly and said nothing while I am hysterically crying with 2 children and huddled over the water main shut off.

Ruth runs around her and we are both looking in the hole going what do we do?? What do we do?
(hysterical people, hysterical!)

Out of nowhere this guy named Anthony comes running around the corner.
Ruth shouts "Are you our guardian angel?"
He was in classes with Casey and happens to live 4 houses away. (who knew?)
He also has the proper wrench to shut off the water.
(Casey had hung up on me to call Anthony and see if he could come help me)

The water is shut off and we breathe a sigh of relief. I wipe the sweat and tears from my face to then formally introduce myself to Anthony.

Then all the pictures you saw are the aftermath my family came over to help me sift through until Casey could get home.

I am sooo thankful for sweet friends who come running to my rescue.
And for others who stay until 11:45 at night helping my husband use shop vac's to sift out ALL the water standing in the guesthouse and garage.

What a story for the book I hope to one day write.
Happy Thursday Y'all!

Master Bath "Officially" Complete

Oh it feels soooo good to get this bathroom done.
Sure there are things I would love to still do in here but if we move I figure I will save my energy for a room in the next house.
On the right wall is the toilet and stand up shower.
The toilet is behind this door.
Here is a close up of our regrouting work in the 70's tiled shower.
I still cant believe we were able to bring this back to life

Once the grout dried we were able to notice better where some tiles had been replaced over the years. oh well...
So proud of the final outcome!

*update: the sign is in the yard as of the beginning of this week. no showings yet but I am practicing keeping everything nice and tidy!

Master Bathroom

Well this is one of those rooms that just really needed some love.
In here we have ...
*painted the cabinets black
painted the walls
*changed out lighting
*finally found a mirror that would work for the space
*added draperies.

Here is what it looked like right after we painted the cabinets and finding the mirror.
(This was soon after we moved in so it took us quite a while to make up our minds on what we want)
(sorry for quality, old iphone pic)
Here is a view from the same angle.

Found this precious ring holder at Anthropologie!

For the window treatment I purchased this Thomas Paul fabric. I Love the outcome!

I am still trying to find artwork for this space. I am open to any suggestions.
Thinking some modern funky art.
Are you one to display an item or two on the back of the toilet?

This is where I have always put the facial tissue.. Not quite as stylish, maybe more a habit!
Yes I am sitting on the toilet to take a photo of the sink. haha
Dang these 1960's skinny homes.
I ended up moving the apothecary jars to the other side of the counter.

The light fixtures are from West Elm outlet.

you can see we have a nice amount of storage above the lavitory area.
I really really hate how shiny the cabinets turned out.
This was obviously pre pinterest days...

and still torn as to if I should repaint them a correct black finish or high gloss white...

Thoughts??

And for the hand towel I plan on adding grey and white striped turkish towels under the Anthro hand towel.

The flooring I am obviously obsessed with.
Here are the cabinets below the sink. They have really had some wear and tear to them...

The unique thing about this bathroom is it is accessible from the master and AC's room. so its a true walk through bathroom.

Here is one final view.

and from baby girls room

Left to do:
replace the faucet
replace the shower knobs and shower head
regrout shower
seal bathroom floor with a fresh coat of white epoxy
re-caulk everything
repaint the cabinets...

Now I am tired just typing out this list.

Kids Bathroom Update

Once we found out we were having a boy we knew a shabby chic pink bathroom would not foot the
bill. I mean, the bathroom is in his room. So we packed away all our cute shabby chic-ness (for another house) and decided to make this a boy/girl bathroom they can both enjoy.
This is a very narrow bathroom so using less really was more here.
(Luckily, behind the door is a nice deep linen closet so a lot can be stored there.)
btw the yellow lighting and lime green walls made this small space really difficult to photograph. :\
We found the shower curtain online; Garnet Hill.
And we had someone make the bottom frame and the top distressed frame is from a local crafts fair we attended back in the fall.

I just stuck a picture I had in the top frame.
In the bottom one is the card of the company who made the frame, waiting on little fella to arrive so I can fill it with pictures of both the kids.
and yes, we still need to replace the caulking around the tub.. adding that to daddy's"to-do" list.
